Dojo's Enemy - Part 1: Ringworm on the Mats

The invisible threat lurks on the mats!

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin. Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm but by fungi called dermatophytes. These fungi feed on keratin, a protein found in the skin, hair, and nails.

But fear not, Jiu-Jitsu master! With the right techniques, you can dominate ringworm before it dominates you.

In this first chapter of the “Dojo’s Enemy” series, we will unravel the secrets of ringworm and equip you with the tools to combat it.

Double Attacks: Ringworm is treacherous. It is not content to merely cause intense itching that disrupts your training. This villain also increases the risk of secondary bacterial infections, turning a simple attack into a devastating double whammy.

Lightning-Fast Proliferation: Ringworm is highly contagious and spreads like wildfire. A handshake with an infected colleague, an unsuspecting hug, or even contact with the gym floor can be enough to contaminate you. This is a threat that cannot be ignored!

Training Interrupted: Your dreams of submitting in Jiu-Jitsu can be crushed by a single case of ringworm. No training, no progress, no glory! Ringworm is not content to just take you off the mats, it also steals your chance to become a champion.

Prevention: The Gentle Art of Defeating Ringworm

But all is not lost! Ringworm can be defeated, and the key to victory lies in prevention.

  • Relentless Hygiene: Be a hygiene ninja! Shower immediately after training, wash your hands frequently, and wear clean, dry clothes. This is your most powerful weapon against ringworm.

  • What if you catch ringworm? It’s your responsibility to stay off the mats until you’re fully recovered. Avoid direct contact with others—no handshakes, hugs, or sharing equipment. Ringworm spreads through contact, so protect your teammates and yourself by keeping your distance until you’re healed.

  • Quick Strike: Suspect ringworm? Seek medical attention immediately! Prompt treatment with topical antifungals gets you back on the mats in no time. Ringworm is dangerous, but not invincible. With quick treatment, you’ll be back training in no time.
